Metallic surfaces can be difficult to quantify for color.   The color measurement varies dramatically with the angle that you view it. For this very reason BYK-Gardner developed the BYK mac i multi-angle color instrument. It measures the color and sparkle of the metal and other effect surfaces at 6 different angles and even quantifies how much sparkle there is on the surface.

However, this is just too much information for basic color quantification of bare metals, building materials or inexpensive household or automotive accessories. More…

The BYK-Gardner color-guide and spectro-guide contain many common and useful color indices. One can change the instrument to most of the widely used color systems: CIE, Lab (hunter), Spectrum, XYZ, Yxy, FMC2 and others. You can also change the instrument to a number of different indices to measure color difference, whiteness, yellowness, opacity and strength. But nowhere in these lists are any indications of the LRV of the color you are measuring. More…

A recent addition to the spectro-guide’s list of color indices is the Grey Scale. The Grey Scale is one of the most important tools to evaluate color shading and staining, and is widely used by the automotive industry to measure the fade of the fabric in a vehicle’s interior. It is based upon both ISO and AATCC specifications. More…

Metamerism 1

It’s happened to all of us. We pick out a product in a store based on its color, only to get home and find that it doesn’t look like we first thought it did. That sweater that you thought was grey actually has a green tinge to it, or that perfect off-white paint color looks a little too yellow once you apply it to your walls. What’s going on? You may be experiencing an effect known as Metamerism.

It’s easy to say, “My customer does not specify that test”, or, “We’ve always only recorded this information”. This is the easiest route to take. But, when it comes to quality control, the quickest route doesn’t often result in the best quality. Those companies who strive to improve their processes, find efficiencies, and make themselves known as being the best at what they do are those which win the big contracts and survive through even the most challenging economic times. Is there a way to convert the gloss measurement at one angle to the gloss measurement at a different angle? For example, you may have a single angle gloss instrument and be required to report the gloss at a different angle to one of your customers. More…

Composite deck boards can shift color depending on the angle of view as well as direction of installation. The BYK-mac i is used to quantify these changes allowing the manufacturer to control lots prior to sending them to the installer. Wear of the embossing wheel or wear of press plates have a direct impact on color changes of composite deck boards. Below is a visual and data of a customer using the BYK-mac i. More…
